MusiCares Honors Carole King, Jimmy Kimmel Steals My Game

The first big party I attended during this years Grammy week was the MusiCares person of the year tribute to Carole King.  Every year the Grammy Foundation along with MusiCares rolls out a plethora of A-List performers to sing the songs of this years chosen honouree.  There were plenty of A-Listers who wanted to be a part of this special night, as Carole King is such an influential artist.

From Lady Gaga to Alicia Keys, some of music’s biggest names payed homage to the prolific singer/songwriter. Carole King is known as somewhat of a recluse, and she rarely performs live (outside of her recent limited tour with James Taylor), thus making this night that much more special for those performing, and for those in attendance.

Memorable performances included Pink taking on the classic “So Far Away”; Lady Gaga playing the piano and singing a beautiful rendition of King’s huge hit from the 70′s “You’ve Got A Friend”. Alicia Keys topped off the night singing the most famous song King ever wrote: “Natural Woman”, which brought the house down, as Keys poured every ounce of her soul into the beautiful song.

Jimmy Kimmel MC’d the night, and he finally introduced the honouree herself to the stage to sing her classics. The night ended with all the performers on stage alongside Carole, singing one last enormous hit together, “I Feel The Earth Move”.

Making my way between the audience and backstage for most of the night, I caught up with several of the musicians I wanted to meet, culminating at the end of the evening with a very lucky opportunity to have a picture taken with Carole King on stage, and have her sign her classic album “Tapestry”.  Carole is notorious amongst autograph collectors and dealers for not signing autographs and being a very tough artist to get access to. So it was amazing when host Jimmy Kimmel even pulled out his own copy of “Tapestry” on vinyl, on stage, and said “Carole, since I’ve got you here can you please sign my copy of “Tapestry”?”
