LA Stories: Dave Grohl is back on stage & Jeff Beck gets honored

Another typically busy night in Los Angeles had me doing a balancing an act between two important events. The first was in honour of Jeff Beck and Patrick Dempsey and held at the Petersen Automotive museum on Fairfax. The second event was an Autism benefit  at Boulevard 3 in Hollywood hosted by Michael Chiklis and Maria Menounos with special musical performance by Dave Grohl.  I managed to obtain Jeff Beck’s autograph on some vinyl at the first event while Jeff took a tour of the museums Hot Rod collection (Jeff is a big Hot Rod enthusiast and car collector) and then hustled over to see Dave Grohl, among others, in the green room prior to his performance. While in the green room, I conversed with Josh Jackson and his beautiful wife, Actress Diane Kruger about there time in Toronto dating back to Josh shooting the film The Skulls at University of Toronto in 1999.

While waiting for the concert to begin, I stood next to the night’s host Michael Chiklis as he watched the Red Sox/Cardinals World Series game . Chiklis is a a huge Red Sox fan by the way. While watching the game, actor Evan Handler – who plays Charlie Runkel on Californication - walked over to say hello to Michael and the three of us began chatting baseball as Jon Hamm appeared on the tv screen wearing a Cardinals hat at the World Series game in Boston. This prompted Michael to tell us a great story about Jon Hamm. Michael mentioned he just met Hamm for the first time on a red carpet a year ago and the Hamm had run up to him to introduce himself saying, ‘Michael I have got to tell you a story’ and so right there on the red carpet Jon Hamm told Michael that years ago when Michael won the Golden Globe award in 2002 for his role on The Shield  he saw him with his fellow co-stars celebrating the award at Mastro’s steakouse in Beverly Hills, and that he thought it was amazing to see what a tight knit group they really were and how inspiring it was to see.  Michael, puzzled, asked “Were you there at Mastro’s that night?” and Jon replied “I was your waiter.”
The incredible night concluded with a very rare solo acoustic performance by Dave Grohl. During the very intimate performance Dave commented about how good it felt to be performing his Foo Fighters songs again and you could see he missed being up on stage since his band has been on a break.

After the performances I caught up with Dave once more in the green room who was super charged about the prospect of going back out on the road with his band.
